2026 Sri Lanka Maritime and Logistics Conference Set to Launch from September 9-11

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE — The Colombo International Maritime and Logistics Conference (CIMC) will host its eighth edition from September 9 to 11, 2026, at the Radisson Blu Hotel Galadari in Colombo. This event is being organized by CIMC Events in partnership with the Shippers’ Academy Colombo and Shippers’ Academy International. This notable conference comes at a time when global trade routes are experiencing significant disruptions in the Middle East, escalating costs, and vulnerabilities at critical maritime choke points, prompting global supply chains to seek dependable regional alternatives.

The strategic positioning of Sri Lanka’s ports has sparked renewed international interest in catering to these evolving trade demands. Current major port development projects are underway in Colombo and Hambantota, while Trincomalee—recognized as the second-largest natural harbor globally—emerges as a significant alternative for accessing the vast two-billion-strong market in the Bay of Bengal region.

Nevertheless, industry experts caution that traditional transshipment methods are insufficient for constructing a modern maritime economy. Organizers emphasize the necessity for standard practices to transition into comprehensive logistics zones to fully leverage the geographic benefits of the island.

“Free ports provide a competitive advantage over conventional port-to-port operations. The industry is now valued in the trillions and continues to expand,” the organizers remarked in their event overview.

The conference will also delve into essential operational components such as ship bunkering infrastructure, marine engineering, and dry docking. Notably, for the first time in South Asia, the Chairman of the United States Federal Maritime Commission will deliver a keynote address, elaborating on U.S. policy frameworks and competitive regulations aimed at bolstering international maritime transportation.

Moreover, participants from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and regional stakeholders will discuss necessary reforms in port policy and the swift industrial growth in India. The event will conclude with a multi-party political discussion aimed at challenging local legislators to adopt modern strategic frameworks to enhance the economic impact of the maritime sector.
