In December of last year, extensive flooding in Sri Lanka forced numerous communities to embark on a path of recovery. While the immediate concern was the restoration of homes and livelihoods, many educational institutions also suffered significant damage. Numerous schools lost vital facilities such as IT laboratories, which were essential for students to acquire digital skills, conduct practical lessons, and, for many in rural areas, experience computer usage for the first time. The absence of these resources disrupted learning processes and exacerbated the existing digital divide faced by rural schools.
As the nation transitioned from emergency relief to long-term recovery efforts, 99x, a global product engineering firm based in Sri Lanka, initiated various recovery programs through its Corporate Relief Fund. This initiative aimed to unite employees, clients, and partners in providing support to the communities affected by the floods. A notable project was launched in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office and SLASSCOM, focusing on the restoration of technological infrastructure in the flood-affected regions.
Understanding the critical role of technology access in education, 99x actively participated in efforts to rebuild IT laboratories in schools that had been damaged. Over several months, teams collaborated with the Prime Minister’s Office, SLASSCOM, and local school communities to identify three schools in Mahiyanganaya for the establishment of new IT laboratories, essential for developing digital skills that are increasingly vital in today’s world.
In July, volunteers from 99x went to Mahiyanganaya to finalize the restoration of IT laboratories at Hebarawa Maha Vidyalaya, Bathalayaya Maha Vidyalaya, and Keselpotha Maha Vidyalaya. This initiative involved the installation of laptops, classroom furniture, and necessary infrastructure to make these laboratories operational once again. Students eagerly gathered outside, excited to witness the unveiling of their new facilities. The principal and educators expressed their relief at being able to resume practical IT lessons after months of deprivation.
Mr. Prasana Monohara Jayathilaka, the Principal of Hebarawa Maha Vidyalaya, shared his gratitude, stating, “On behalf of our students and teachers, I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to 99x for donating computers and computer equipment to our school. This support will help our students enhance their computer knowledge and practical skills through improved learning facilities.”
During the handover ceremony, Kalana Wijesekara, Chief Developer Experience Officer representing the 99x Corporate Relief Fund, remarked, “Technology is opening doors to opportunities that were once out of reach for many young people. Our hope is that these IT labs give students the chance to learn, discover their potential, and work towards building successful careers in the future. We want them to see that curiosity, determination, and the right opportunities can help them achieve far more than they may imagine today. The opportunities created through initiatives like this have the potential to strengthen not only individual futures but also the communities they will one day serve.”
For many young individuals, particularly in rural settings, school computer labs mark the beginning of their journey into technology. The revitalized IT laboratories in Mahiyanganaya symbolize renewed prospects for students to learn, acquire practical skills, and prepare for their futures. While the laboratories are now established, the mission continues. In the upcoming months, volunteers from 99x plan to return to conduct IT training and knowledge-sharing sessions, ensuring that students maximize these newly created learning environments.
