George Steuart & Company, Sri Lanka’s oldest mercantile establishment founded in 1835, has partnered with the Sri Lanka Natural History Society (SLNHS), one of the country’s oldest scientific societies, to support its efforts to promote knowledge and appreciation of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity and ecosystems.

For nearly two centuries, George Steuart’s journey has been closely intertwined with the evolution of Sri Lanka’s economy and its commercial landscape. Similarly, the Sri Lanka Natural History Society, established in 1912, has spent more than a century advancing the study and preservation of the island’s natural environment. Through lectures, field excursions, and knowledge sharing among scientists, conservationists, and enthusiasts, the Society continues to play an important role in documenting and promoting understanding of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity.

Through this partnership, George Steuart’s CSR arm, Steuart Senehasa, will support the SLNHS Monthly Lecture series. The long-standing platform brings together experts to share insights on topics ranging from wildlife and marine ecosystems to environmental conservation and nature photography, helping foster greater awareness and understanding of Sri Lanka’s ecological landscape. Beginning in May 2026, the series will be presented as the “SLNHS Monthly Lecture – Sponsored by George Steuart & Company”.

Commenting on the partnership, Group Director of George Steuart & Co., Mrs. Varuni Fernando said, “The Sri Lanka Natural History Society plays an important role in helping us better understand the natural environment that shapes our island. At George Steuart, we believe encouraging curiosity and greater awareness of Sri Lanka’s remarkable biodiversity, especially among younger generations, is an important part of safeguarding it for the future. Supporting initiatives that share knowledge and strengthen social awareness reflects our belief that business should serve a broader purpose beyond profit.”

The initiative reflects George Steuart’s corporate ethos of “Purpose beyond Profit”. This sponsorship to disseminate valuable information to society, educate communities, and foster greater social sensitivity stands as a tangible expression of that commitment.

Prof. Enoka Corea, President of the Sri Lanka Natural History Society, noted, “For more than a century, the Sri Lanka Natural History Society has worked to advance the study and understanding of the island’s natural life through knowledge sharing, research, and field observation. Support from George Steuart enables us to continue creating spaces where people can learn about and engage with Sri Lanka’s remarkable natural world.”

By bringing together two institutions with deep historical roots in Sri Lanka, the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that knowledge of the country’s natural environment continues to be studied and carried forward for future generations.
