The MAS Athlete Training Academy and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) entered a landmark partnership to advance holistic athlete development. SLIIT is MAS Athlete Training Academy’s official Higher Education Partner, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2025.

The goal of the partnership is to ensure that promising Sri Lankan athletes no longer have to choose between academic ambition and sporting excellence. Instead, the initiative establishes a structured dual pathway that enables athletes to pursue higher education while continuing their training.

SLIIT will offer five full bachelor’s degree scholarships annually for a period of eight years to eligible MAS Athlete Training Academy athletes. These scholarships aim to provide meaningful academic access and stability, supporting athletes as they build qualifications alongside their sporting careers.

SLIIT Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lalith Gamage, said: “As the Vice Chancellor of SLIIT, I firmly believe that the partnership between SLIIT and MAS to support young athletes in Sri Lanka is of great importance. Nurturing budding sporting talent is essential for fostering discipline, resilience, and national pride among our youth. Our ambition is to foster international standard medalists, championing at Olympics and other major tournaments, bringing glory to Sri Lanka on the world stage. This initiative reflects our dedication to holistic growth, empowering the next generation to achieve their full potential and contribute positively to our nation’s future.”

Beyond financial support, the collaboration offers a comprehensive approach to athlete welfare and performance. MAS Athlete Training Academy’s structured coaching, competition pathways, sports science support, nutrition guidance, and mental wellbeing initiatives will now be complemented by SLIIT’s academic resources, learning environment, and career development opportunities. Together, the institutions aim to nurture balanced, resilient, and future-ready individuals.

This partnership also aligns with a broader national ambition: developing athletes capable of representing Sri Lanka at major international competitions, including the 2028 Los Angeles and 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games. By combining academic progression with high-performance training, the initiative strengthens the foundation required for sustained international competitiveness.

Importantly, the collaboration has already moved from commitment to action. Athletes have commenced enrolment at SLIIT, and additional candidates have been identified for future intakes. The early implementation signals a shared seriousness about translating vision into measurable impact.

The SLIIT- MAS Athlete Training Academy partnership represents a strategic investment in athlete welfare and national sporting success. By creating an ecosystem where academic achievement and elite performance reinforce one another, the initiative is poised to cultivate a generation of educated, disciplined, and high-performing sportspeople prepared to compete on the world stage while securing their futures beyond it.
