FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has announced that electricity rates will rise by as much as 25 percent, taking various factors into consideration.
K P L Chandralal, the Chairman of PUCSL, informed the media that households consuming fewer than 30 units will experience a 4.3 percent increase in their electricity bills. In contrast, those utilizing more than 180 units will face a significant 25 percent hike.
For consumers using between 31-60 units, the increase will be 6.9 percent, while those in the 61-91 unit range will see a 7.2 percent rise. Customers consuming between 91-180 units will also experience a 7.2 percent increase.
Chandralal explained that the PUCSL reviewed the tariff revision request from the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and, following public consultations, made the decision to adjust the tariffs.
The CEB had proposed a 13.56 percent increase to be evenly distributed across all customer segments. This adjustment is part of the CEB’s commitment to prevent losses under an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, following previous financial setbacks and rate reductions. (Colombo/Mar30/2026)
