Sri Lankan President Emphasizes Urgent Strategies to Mitigate Effects of Middle Eastern Conflict During IMF Conference

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized the importance of implementing strategies to mitigate the effects of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East on the nation’s populace during a meeting with senior officials from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The IMF delegation, led by Mission Chief Evan Papageorgiou, engaged with President Dissanayake to review the progress of Sri Lanka’s economic reform initiatives under the Extended Fund Facility supported by the IMF.

According to a statement from the President’s Media Division (PMD), the discussions highlighted the current status of Sri Lanka concerning the fifth and sixth reviews of the IMF program. The IMF representatives provided updates on recent advancements made by the country.

The IMF officials praised the economic strides that Sri Lanka has made under the current administration, particularly noting the country’s movement towards a more stable economic environment, as evidenced by the achievement of growth targets, enhancements in revenue management, and an increase in foreign reserves.

The PMD further indicated that the talks on Thursday also examined ways for Sri Lanka to continue progressing within the IMF framework while preserving the economic stability that has been established.

It was acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East presents an external challenge that Sri Lanka cannot completely avoid. Nonetheless, the government has been handling the situation carefully, making calculated decisions to alleviate pressures on fuel prices and the energy sector while ensuring that vulnerable groups receive targeted assistance.

Despite facing external pressures, the IMF delegation recognized the government’s efforts to protect economic advancement while effectively managing both the economy and the well-being of its citizens.

In response to the comments from the IMF representatives, President Dissanayake affirmed that Sri Lanka has successfully met all the targets outlined in the program and has achieved a state of relative stability. He reiterated the necessity of taking all required actions to lessen the impact on the public.
