Sri Lanka will get first Geogas LPG ship on Jan 05 : Minister

Sri Lanka is set to receive its first consignment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Swiss-based Geogas Trading on January 5, according to Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. The company was awarded the contract following an international competitive bidding process.

“There will be no shortage of LPG,” Minister Herath assured parliament, adding that all necessary agreements have been signed with the supplier.

Under the terms of the contract, Geogas Trading will supply 380,000 metric tonnes of LPG, with a margin of plus or minus 20 percent, to state-run Litro Gas over the course of 2026. Minister Herath noted that Geogas secured the deal by offering a price 15 cents lower than the next closest bidder.

During the parliamentary session, Sri Lanka Podujana Party member Chamara Sampath Dissanayake expressed concerns that OQ Gas, the Oman-based company that previously supplied gas, had lost the contract, potentially leading to shortages in the coming year. However, Minister Herath reiterated that the agreements with Geogas are in place and that the company has committed to meeting Sri Lankan standards.

The first shipment from Geogas Trading, which sources its supplies from the United States, is expected to arrive on January 5.
