Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has given the green light to resume construction on Phase III of the Baseline Road Extension Project, according to Minister Nalinda Jayatissa. This phase will extend a 6-lane road from Kirulapona Junction to Dutugemunu Street along the Colombo-Horana road.
“The 0.86-kilometer stretch of road is expected to significantly reduce travel time and alleviate traffic congestion on the Colombo-Horana road, thereby enhancing urban mobility and boosting economic productivity,” Jayatissa stated during a press briefing.
Initially approved in 2009, the project saw bids being called in 2021. However, progress was delayed due to the economic crisis. Jayatissa noted that the project is recognized as a priority infrastructure development under the country’s National Road Master Plan, with approximately 90 percent of the necessary land acquisition for construction already completed.
The planned 860-meter road will feature a 3-lane dual carriageway, complete with raised sidewalks on both sides and a central median.
