FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – Sri Lanka’s revenue collection authority has launched a special field observation program in Colombo and its surrounding areas to enhance tax compliance and formally broaden the tax base, according to the Finance Ministry.

The initiative by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is primarily focused on verifying whether business establishments are properly registered with the IRD. It also aims to ensure the accuracy of information in existing tax files, identify businesses and individuals eligible for taxation, and offer on-site solutions and advice for any tax-related issues encountered during business operations.

Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Nishantha Jayaweera, who participated in the program, stated that effective management of direct tax revenue is crucial for stabilizing the country’s economy. He assured taxpayers that the new measure is not intended to cause inconvenience but is a step towards establishing a fair tax system and strengthening the relationship between the public and the government to meet national revenue targets.
