On February 12, 2026, Hambantota International Port (HIP) welcomed the cruise vessel AIDAdiva for its inaugural call at the southern port, marking AIDA Cruises’ second visit to Hambantota.

The AIDAdiva, an Italian-flagged vessel measuring 251.89 meters, was built in 2007 and is registered in Genoa. It arrived from Thailand carrying approximately 2,000 passengers and 620 crew members, the majority of whom were German nationals. The ship, commanded by Captain Michael Schmid of Germany, is set to sail to Colombo after its stop in Hambantota.

About 1,400 passengers disembarked to participate in organized excursions throughout southern Sri Lanka. These tours were coordinated by Lotus DMC, with port agency services managed by Aitken Spence Shipping Ltd. The visitors explored prominent attractions such as Yala National Park, Galle, and Birds Park, showcasing the region’s wildlife, heritage, and coastal landscapes.

This visit is part of AIDAdiva’s broader Asia itinerary, with some passengers continuing their journey to regional destinations, including India. Although this is the vessel’s first visit to Hambantota, it has previously docked in Colombo. In 2024, its sister ship, AIDAstella, made a successful call at HIP after the port was added to the cruise line’s Sri Lanka program last year.

The latest visit follows the first cruise call of 2026 at HIP by Celebrity Millennium, indicating sustained interest from international cruise operators. Another AIDA Cruises vessel, AIDAstella, is scheduled to visit later this year, starting in Colombo before proceeding to Hambantota.

With both repeat and inaugural calls from global cruise lines, HIP continues to expand its role within Indian Ocean cruise itineraries, backed by modern infrastructure, efficient vessel handling, and proximity to established tourism sites.
