The anticipation is palpable as the C Rugby Tournament returns, bringing with it an exhilarating experience at the CR&FC Grounds. Scheduled for the 17th and 18th of July, this marks the tenth iteration of the C Rugby Tag Rugby Tournament, which promises not just a nostalgic journey but also a vibrant atmosphere filled with entertainment, music, and spirited competition.
Initially conceived as a gathering for alumni from various schools, the tournament has significantly transformed over the years. This edition will feature a new Corporate Segment along with Exhibition Games, enhancing the traditional spirit of camaraderie and friendly rivalries. Sixteen teams, representing both educational institutions and corporate entities, will compete in what has become the premier event for fostering connections through sports.
Organized by AGOAL International and spearheaded by rugby veteran Dilroy Fernando—who has an impressive background as a former player for Isipathana College, CR&FC, as well as an international rugby referee—this five-a-side tag rugby event is set to captivate attendees. The tournament is supported by notable partners including Cinnamon Hotels, Iodex, Red Bull, Frosty, CR&FC, and YES 101.
The tournament kicks off on Friday, July 17th, at 4 PM with preliminary matches in the corporate league/pool. The evening will conclude with a social gathering at the clubhouse featuring live music from the band OIC. The following day, starting at 2 PM, alumni teams will take to the field, competing in preliminary rounds as well as Cup, Plate, and Bowl matches, ultimately leading to the crowning of new champions.
However, rugby is just one facet of the festivities. The C Rugby Tropical Jam Party commences at 3 PM on Saturday, featuring performances by Slipping Chairs, Cold Sweat, Section 8, and DJ Lunatics. A Food Boutique provided by Cinnamon Grand, along with engaging games and a dedicated children’s play area, will enhance the family-friendly atmosphere, ensuring that the event is as much about enjoyment as it is about competition.
Participating school teams include Trinity/Hillwood Ladies, Royal/Visakha, Isipathana/St. Paul’s, St. Joseph’s/St. Bridget’s, Thurstan/Devi Balika, Wesley/Methodist College, Ananda/Museaus College, and St. Sylvester’s/St. Anthony’s Girls School. Meanwhile, the corporate teams, including representatives from the London Stock Exchange, Commercial Bank, WNS, Hutch, Cinnamon Colombo Hotels, Acorn Group, Dialog Axiata, and CDB Finance, will bring an exciting new level of competition to the tournament.
The atmosphere at the CR&FC is charged with energy as participants and fans alike gear up for an unforgettable weekend of rugby and celebration.
