Central Bank to Foster Digital Payment Adoption in Trincomalee

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) is set to host a digital payments awareness initiative in Trincomalee on June 5 and 6, 2026. This event will feature Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, the Governor of CBSL, along with other high-ranking officials from the bank. The primary aim of the initiative is to educate government officials, the business sector, and the general public about various digital payment options. Scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the event will be located in the parking area adjacent to the Central Bus Stand in Trincomalee, showcasing participation from banks, non-bank financial institutions, and other relevant stakeholders.

This initiative is part of a broader national campaign launched by CBSL, themed ‘Shaping the Future Through Digital Payments’, in partnership with financial institutions and various stakeholders. Previous similar events have been successfully conducted in regions including Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, Dambulla, and Kurunegala, significantly increasing public awareness and allowing attendees to experience the advantages and convenience that digital payments provide.

During the Trincomalee event, attendees will have the opportunity to receive tailored support from various financial institutions, including banks, finance companies, and e-money service providers, as well as LankaPay (Pvt.) Ltd., which oversees the LANKAQR and other interbank digital payment systems in the country. Participants can learn how to register for and utilize a diverse array of digital payment services. Furthermore, attendees will be able to purchase various goods and services from merchant stalls within the event venue at discounted rates, thereby experiencing the practicality of digital payments. In addition, financial institutions will organize a merchant engagement initiative in the Trincomalee area to assist local businesses in acquiring the LANKAQR payment acceptance system.

CBSL encourages the residents and business community of Trincomalee to seize this opportunity to enhance their understanding of digital payments and to benefit from the personalized assistance offered by financial institutions during the event.
