The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SGCCI) from Surat, India, have officially renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which aims to enhance business collaboration between Sri Lanka and Gujarat.
This updated MoU was signed by Krishan Balendra, the Chairperson of The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, and Ashok Jirawala, the President of SGCCI, during a visit from an SGCCI business delegation to Colombo. This renewal comes as both regions actively seek out targeted opportunities for trade, investment, and commercial alliances. Following the signing, the delegation participated in a dynamic business networking event with local Sri Lankan companies.
The delegation represented a variety of sectors, including textiles and apparel, textile materials, garment accessories, manufacturing, industrial products, gems and jewellery, waste management, waste-to-energy solutions, information technology, as well as spices and processed foods.
Discussions within the textile and apparel sectors focused on the potential for suppliers from Gujarat to partner with Sri Lanka’s apparel manufacturers. Concurrently, manufacturers of garment accessories and industrial products investigated possible supply and distribution collaborations.
The gems and jewellery sector was also a key area of interest, with the delegation expressing a desire to source Sri Lankan sapphires and other gemstones, while also seeking connections with local jewellery makers, industry associations, and women entrepreneurs.
In addition to trade discussions, the meetings also covered investment and technological opportunities, particularly in waste-to-energy initiatives and digital technology advancements. Participants looked into mutual trade prospects concerning spices and processed food items.
This engagement highlights the extensive and diverse manufacturing and trading capabilities of Gujarat, as well as the potential for Sri Lankan businesses to tap into new suppliers, markets, technologies, and investment opportunities.
With the MoU in place, both chambers are committed to fostering business-to-business interactions, sharing industry insights, and supporting enterprises from Sri Lanka and Gujarat in exploring opportunities within each other’s markets.
