Chinese National People’s Congress Delegation Engages with Sri Lankan Parliament Officials to Strengthen Relations

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – A Chinese delegation led by Xin Chunying, a prominent member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), recently visited Sri Lanka and engaged with parliamentary officials to discuss enhancing bilateral relations.

During her meeting with Speaker of Parliament Jagath Wickramaratne, Chunying highlighted the significance of fostering parliamentary diplomacy between the two nations’ legislatures. She reiterated China’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation for the mutual advantage of both countries, as noted in a statement issued by the parliament.

In her role as Chairperson of the Constitution and Law Committee of the NPC, Chunying was accompanied by Cong Bin, another member of the NPC Standing Committee and Vice Chairperson of the same committee, as well as Gao Zicheng and other officials from the Chinese delegation.

The delegation also held discussions with Bimal Ratnayake, the Minister of Highways and Chair of the Sri Lanka – China Parliamentary Friendship Association. Their talks centered on enhancing parliamentary exchanges, collaboration in policymaking, and reinforcing institutional links through the Friendship Association.

Furthermore, the group met with Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara and participated in sessions of the Ministerial Consultative Committee (MCC) on Justice and National Integration, along with the Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on Governance, Justice, and Civil Protection. During these meetings, representatives from both sides exchanged insights and experiences regarding legal and judicial practices, governance, and institutional collaboration.
