Colombo Jewellery Stores (CJS) has announced a special initiative in honor of World Oceans Day, launching a Limited-Edition Whale Shark Pendant in collaboration with Oceanswell, an organization led by esteemed marine biologist Dr. Asha de Vos. This initiative represents a commitment to marine conservation in Sri Lankan waters.
Only 100 numbered pendants will be produced as part of this limited release, marking the fifth installment in a series that celebrates various marine species through the partnership, which has been active since 2018. Oceanswell is dedicated to scientific research, utilizing storytelling and educational efforts to enhance awareness of Sri Lanka’s rich marine biodiversity. Notably, all profits from the sale of the Whale Shark Pendant will be directed towards supporting Oceanswell’s marine research, educational programs, and conservation efforts throughout Sri Lanka.
The official unveiling took place at Colombo Jewellery Stores on World Oceans Day, where Dr. Asha de Vos delivered a presentation that emphasized the significance of whale sharks and the necessity of safeguarding Sri Lanka’s ocean ecosystems. The Whale Shark Pendant joins a collection that has previously honored the Blue Whale, Dolphin, Sperm Whale, and Orca. This pendant draws inspiration from the whale shark’s gentle nature, impressive size, and unique patterns, serving as both a tribute to the species and a reminder of the ongoing need for ocean conservation. In addition to the pendants, the collaboration has also facilitated the creation of two educational magazines and various awareness campaigns aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation and protection of Sri Lanka’s remarkable marine life.
For many years, conservation has been a core aspect of CJS’s mission. Through strategic partnerships with leading conservation organizations, CJS has engaged in numerous initiatives aimed at preserving Sri Lanka’s unique natural heritage, including elephant and leopard conservation projects with the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) and innovative marine research and educational programs with Oceanswell. These collaborations highlight a mutual understanding that impactful design and storytelling can inspire awareness, promote action, and aid in the conservation of the natural environment.
As CJS marks its 104th anniversary, it continues to be a prominent name in the Sri Lankan jewellery industry, celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship, stunning colored gemstones, and commitment to innovative design. The Whale Shark Pendant not only embodies this legacy but also stands as a symbol of marine conservation and a reminder of the essential role each individual plays in protecting the surrounding marine ecosystems.
