The Colombo Stock Exchange experienced a volatile trading session today, as early morning gains gave way to afternoon declines. The All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed 26.97 points lower at 22,351.55. Initially, the trading began on a positive note during the first half-hour, with the ASPI surpassing the 22,500 mark and recording gains of approximately 150 points. However, the momentum shifted gradually towards negative territory by midday, ultimately resulting in the day’s losses.
The S&P SL20 index showed minimal movement, declining by just 0.72 points to close at 6,279.70, indicating relatively stable performance among the market’s top 20 companies. The market recorded a substantial turnover of Rs. 4.31 billion for the day, reflecting active participation from both domestic and foreign investors.
Domestic investors dominated market activity, with domestic purchases totaling Rs. 4.22 billion and domestic sales reaching Rs. 4.20 billion. Foreign participation remained relatively modest, with foreign purchases of Rs. 91 million and foreign sales of Rs. 113 million, resulting in a net foreign outflow of Rs. 22 million.
