Colombo West International Terminal (Private) Limited (CWIT) is steadfast in its dedication to transforming the maritime experience for stakeholders in the industry. In alignment with its vision to redefine the future of shipping, CWIT has achieved a significant milestone with the arrival of two Ship-to-Shore electric cranes and seven Cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes, marking the commencement of Phase 2 of its capacity enhancement initiative. These cranes, recognized as the tallest in the region, represent a substantial investment in state-of-the-art port infrastructure. This development underscores CWIT’s commitment to facilitating more efficient, intelligent, and environmentally friendly cargo handling operations while ensuring reliable scheduling and connectivity for the shipping sector.
A New Era for Sri Lanka’s Maritime Industry
The recent delivery of equipment follows a remarkable inaugural year for CWIT, during which the terminal successfully managed over one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This achievement is noteworthy as it is the fastest any terminal at the Port of Colombo has reached the one-million-TEU mark in its first year of operation. This accomplishment is a testament to the terminal’s operational excellence, advanced technological integration, and the trust placed in CWIT by prominent global shipping companies.
The introduction of the new cranes signifies a pivotal advancement in expanding the terminal’s capabilities, further supporting Sri Lanka’s goal of establishing itself as a premier maritime and logistics hub in the Indian Ocean. This capital investment enhances regional connectivity and positions the Port of Colombo as a strategic hub, especially amidst disruptions in trade flows resulting from geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East.
Overview of CWIT
Situated within the Port of Colombo, CWIT stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most crucial maritime infrastructure developments. The terminal, developed through an investment of approximately USD 800 million, is a collaborative venture involving Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited, John Keells Holdings PLC (JKH), and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).
This project integrates global expertise with local leadership and strategic investments to establish a world-class container terminal capable of accommodating the largest shipping lines worldwide. Since its inception, CWIT has been instrumental in enhancing the competitiveness of the Port of Colombo while fostering economic growth, improving regional trade connectivity, and generating employment opportunities for the nation.
Enhancing Efficiency with Innovative Infrastructure
CWIT is recognized as the first fully automated deep-water container terminal in Sri Lanka. It features cutting-edge automation, electrified cargo handling systems, and smart digital technologies designed to meet the current and future demands of global shipping.
With a quay length of 1,400 meters, a water depth of 20 meters, and an expected annual capacity of around 3.2 million TEUs upon completion, the facility can simultaneously accommodate three of the world’s largest container vessels, thereby facilitating faster turnaround times and improved operational efficiency.
The latest cranes further enhance these capabilities, designed for optimal precision, productivity, and energy efficiency. This addition will boost cargo handling capacity while promoting environmentally friendly operations through reduced emissions and electrified technology. This investment illustrates CWIT’s dedication to developing future-ready infrastructure that enhances operational performance and contributes to sustainable port development.
CEO Emphasizes Commitment to Progress and Excellence
“The introduction of these electric cranes signifies another critical milestone in our Phase 2 development journey. They not only stand as the tallest in the area but also embody our ongoing investment in cutting-edge technology that enables faster, smarter, and more sustainable cargo handling operations,” he commented.
He highlighted that the terminal’s success in managing one million TEUs in its first year showcases its operational capabilities and the dedication of its workforce. “Our greatest asset is our people. The commitment, professionalism, and expertise of our employees have allowed us to achieve unprecedented performance in our inaugural year. As we continue to grow, we are confident that Sri Lankan talent will be the driving force behind innovation, operational excellence, and outstanding customer service,” Kanwar added.
Kanwar reiterated that Phase 2 is another step towards enhancing efficiency for customers while reinforcing Sri Lanka’s expanding role in global maritime trade. He reaffirmed CWIT’s commitment to investing in sustainable technologies, bolstering regional trade connectivity, and delivering excellence in service through ongoing innovation.
Envisioning the Future of the Port of Colombo
The arrival of the two Ship-to-Shore cranes and seven new Cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes signifies more than just the addition of new equipment; it represents a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of the Port of Colombo. With the expectation of four more STS cranes and five CRMGs by the end of September, CWIT’s fleet will expand to 14 STS cranes and 30 CRMGs, significantly increasing the terminal’s capacity to manage rising cargo volumes. By blending innovative automation, sustainable infrastructure, and strategic partnerships, CWIT continues to bolster the Port of Colombo’s ability to meet the shifting demands of global shipping.
Building on the record of being the fastest terminal in the Port of Colombo to handle one million TEUs in its inaugural year, CWIT is now well-positioned to further enhance terminal capacity, improve operational efficiency, and support environmentally friendly cargo handling operations. As Phase 2 progresses, the terminal will continue to strengthen the Port of Colombo’s capabilities, reinforce Sri Lanka’s status as a regional maritime and logistics hub, and contribute to the nation’s long-term economic growth through world-class port infrastructure and service excellence.
