Young Sri Lankan racer Yevan David is set to create another chapter in his personal history this weekend as he participates in the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix for the first time. This event marks the return of the FIA Formula 3 Championship after a lengthy hiatus since the season opener in Melbourne.
Competing under AIX Racing, David arrives in Monaco rejuvenated, having utilized the break effectively to engage in FIA Formula 3 testing at the Red Bull Ring, extensive simulator sessions, and a renewed commitment to both his racing career and academic studies, as he approaches the completion of his A-Level examinations.
The Monaco race signifies the start of a pivotal segment in the FIA Formula 3 calendar, with several European races scheduled throughout June and July.
“The time away from FIA F3 has been lengthy, but I have kept myself occupied with my studies,” David stated. “As I wrap up my A-levels this year, I have been concentrating on mathematics, physics, and psychology, while also spending time in Sri Lanka with my sponsors and supporters. The testing at the Red Bull Ring was very productive; we gained valuable insights and had a positive experience leading up to Monaco.”
Monaco is renowned as one of the most challenging venues in motorsport, requiring absolute precision, confidence, and focus as drivers navigate the narrow street circuit.
David has dedicated substantial time to simulator training in preparation for the race, emphasizing that adaptability will be essential throughout the weekend.
“Monaco is a track where improvement is always possible, regardless of the number of laps completed,” he explained. “I have spent extensive hours on the simulator because confidence and accuracy are just as crucial as speed. The grip varies with every lap, given that it’s a street circuit, and track evolution is significant. With limited practice laps available, it’s vital to absorb as much information as possible each time I’m on the track.”
The unique format of this year’s FIA Formula 3 schedule has allowed David to reflect on the lessons learned during his debut in Melbourne, arriving in Monaco with a renewed outlook.
“The break has actually worked in my favor,” he remarked. “It provided me the opportunity to assess my performance in Melbourne, adjust my strategy, and focus on my areas for improvement. Instead of rushing into the next race, I’ve been able to reset, practice thoroughly, and return feeling recharged. I am confident that I have learned a lot and am ready to perform well.”
Qualifying is traditionally a pivotal aspect of the Monaco weekend, given the limited overtaking opportunities compared to other circuits.
Despite the distinct challenges, David is adopting the same mindset he applies at all tracks.
“Qualifying is crucial in Monaco, but it’s important not to get ahead of oneself,” he said. “The strategy remains consistent: concentrate on the fundamentals, stay present, and deliver the best lap possible. After that, we can build from there.”
For David, competing in Monaco symbolizes another landmark in his extraordinary journey, having already made history as the first Sri Lankan driver in FIA Formula 3.
“Being the first Sri Lankan in FIA Formula 3 and now racing in Monaco is something I still find hard to fully grasp,” he confessed. “Melbourne was incredibly meaningful as it was my first weekend in a Formula 1 setting, and now heading straight to Monaco is another significant milestone. Reflecting on the years during COVID and before, it feels like it was not long ago. Now, we are here, preparing for Monaco. The time has flown by.”
This 18-year-old racer is aware of the event’s significance and will honor Ayrton Senna with a special helmet design during the race, as Senna’s legendary performances in Monaco have inspired countless drivers globally.
While Monaco stands out as one of the most iconic locations in motorsport, David is equally eager for what the future holds, with historic tracks like Spa-Francorchamps and Monza also on the 2026 calendar.
