The Sri Lankan Government has embarked on a project to transform Delft Island into the nation’s first Zero Emission eco-tourism hub, emphasizing sustainability, environmental protection, and the safeguarding of its distinctive natural and cultural heritage. A site visit and stakeholder dialogue regarding this development were conducted, led by Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, the Deputy Minister of Tourism.
Delft Island, celebrated for its impressive Dutch colonial ruins, a wealth of archaeological sites, and the unique sight of wild horses roaming the landscape, holds great potential for tourism. This initiative seeks to convert the island into a benchmark for sustainable tourism while ensuring the protection of its historical, cultural, and environmental treasures for future generations.
During the event, Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe remarked that Delft Island should be an attraction for both international tourists and local visitors. Despite its unique offerings, the island has thus far contributed minimally to Sri Lanka’s tourism sector. He reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to realizing the island’s full tourism potential through eco-friendly and sustainable development practices.
The discussions concentrated on determining essential infrastructure improvements necessary for establishing Delft Island as a leading tourism destination. Critical areas of focus included enhancing the water supply, upgrading road networks, improving transportation and accessibility, and fostering community engagement by enhancing local residents’ knowledge and hospitality skills to enable them to benefit from tourism growth.
The Deputy Minister reiterated that environmental sustainability will be the foundation of the development approach. The Government envisions Delft Island as a premier Zero Emission tourism destination that exemplifies responsible tourism practices, encourages renewable and sustainable methods, and serves as a paradigm for ecologically sound tourism development in Sri Lanka.
Attendees included Jaffna District MP Ilankumaran Karunanathan, Dr. Sribavanadarajah Shanmuganathan, Rajeevan Jeyachandramoorthy, local political representatives, the Divisional Secretary of Delft, government officials, and members of the local community, all of whom engaged actively in discussions concerning the island’s future development.
Officials from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) also took part in the site visit and discussions.
This proposed initiative signifies a significant advancement in positioning Delft Island as one of Sri Lanka’s most unique sustainable tourism destinations, where the principles of environmental conservation, the preservation of cultural heritage, and community-focused tourism development converge to deliver a top-tier visitor experience.
