Certain journeys are quantified by distance, while others are characterized by their impact.
DFCC Bank’s recent event, the Ride for the Rosette, brought together a diverse group of participants including customers, staff, cycling fans, families, and wildlife advocates from Colombo, Kandy, and Tissamaharama. Their shared goal was to safeguard one of Sri Lanka’s most cherished and endangered species: the Sri Lankan Leopard.
This ride is part of DFCC Bank’s ongoing Ride for Life Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, which has evolved into a platform that promotes significant causes through cycling. Over the years, Ride for Life has successfully united communities to raise awareness on mental health, women’s empowerment, health and wellness, and social engagement. This year, the focus shifted to wildlife conservation, emphasizing that the responsibility of protecting nature is not only an environmental duty but also an investment in the future of our communities.
The Ride for the Rosette elevated cycling beyond a mere athletic activity. Each kilometre cycled represented a tangible commitment to conservation, and every participant became a representative for one of Sri Lanka’s most emblematic species. The event highlighted the potential for everyday individuals, driven by a shared mission, to effect extraordinary change.
This sense of unity extended well beyond the event itself. Participants contributed voluntarily to leopard conservation efforts, and DFCC Bank pledged to match every donation, effectively doubling the financial support for on-the-ground initiatives.
All funds collected through this initiative, along with the Bank’s matching contributions, will aid conservation programs run by the Wilderness & Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT). These programs include the Yala Buffer Area Project and the Hallgolla Estate Project, which aim to protect leopard habitats, promote scientific research, preserve biodiversity, and improve coexistence between wildlife and surrounding communities.
Thimal Perera, Director/CEO of DFCC Bank, remarked on the initiative, stating, “The Sri Lankan Leopard is more than just a symbol; as the island’s top predator, it plays a crucial role in sustaining the health and balance of our ecosystems. Protecting the leopard means safeguarding the forests, biodiversity, and natural environments that we all rely on. Through Ride for the Rosette, we aimed to provide people with a meaningful way to engage in this crucial effort. We are immensely thankful to every participant whose enthusiasm and generosity will bolster conservation efforts where they are most needed.”
This initiative embodies DFCC Bank’s broader conviction that sustainability is most effective when communities actively engage in fostering positive change. Through responsible financing, environmental stewardship, health and wellness initiatives, and community collaborations, the Bank remains committed to supporting programs that yield enduring benefits for both society and the planet.
The Sri Lankan Leopard has inhabited these forests for millennia. Ensuring its continued presence will depend on the choices we make today. Sometimes, the journey to protect nature begins with the simple act of riding a bicycle.
