Diving Deep into the Sea: Oceanswell Presents Two Nights of Captivating Ocean Narratives in Colombo

Oceanswell, a trailblazer in marine conservation research and education in Sri Lanka, is set to enchant Colombo with its upcoming event titled “Into the Ocean’s Depths.” This complimentary two-night gathering will focus on storytelling related to sharks, whales, and the mysteries of the deep sea. Scheduled for May 9th and 10th, 2026, the event will be held at the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka Auditorium from 6 PM to 8 PM on both evenings, in collaboration with the Save Our Seas Foundation and Aitken Spence Travels.

This initiative aims to make ocean science both accessible and engaging for a broad audience. “Into the Ocean’s Depths” will feature an impressive roster of globally recognized marine scientists and researchers who will share their insights, findings, and personal narratives from some of the most intriguing yet least understood marine environments. The event promises to be an exceptional opportunity for the people of Sri Lanka to experience the ocean’s wonders through the perspectives of dedicated researchers.

The first evening, May 9th, will focus on sharks, highlighted by a presentation from Marine Biologist Dr. David Shiffman titled “Why Sharks Matter.” This will be followed by a panel discussion exploring the complexities of shark research, featuring Marine Social Scientist Lasuni Gule Godage and Interdisciplinary Scientist Dr. Melissa Cronin. The second evening, May 10th, will shift the spotlight to whales and the deep ocean, with Deep Sea Scientist Sheena Talma discussing “From Mountain Tops to the Deep Sea,” and Dr. Asha de Vos, a Marine Biologist, presenting “The Secret Lives of Sri Lanka’s Giants.”

Dr. Asha de Vos, the Founder and Executive Director of Oceanswell, expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, “We are thrilled to host this gathering over two evenings where the Sri Lankan community can hear captivating stories about our oceans—from sharks to whales and the depths in between. We believe that the ocean belongs to everyone, and events like this can foster meaningful connections among people.”

While admission to “Into the Ocean’s Depths” is free, pre-registration is necessary due to limited seating. The public is encouraged to register early to ensure their participation in this unique celebration of ocean storytelling, accessible science, and enriching dialogue.
