EASL Applauds U.S. Tariff Announcement and Advocates for Strengthened Trade Relations with America

The Exporters Association of Sri Lanka (EASL) has expressed its strong approval of the United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) decision to impose a 10% tariff on imports from Sri Lanka, as part of the newly introduced Section 301 regulations.

This development is a significant advancement for Sri Lanka’s export industry, especially considering the much higher tariff rates that were initially suggested. The final decision helps maintain the competitive edge of Sri Lankan goods in one of their key export markets.

EASL extends its heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency the President, the Sri Lankan Government, and all officials and stakeholders whose dedicated efforts through ongoing dialogue contributed to this favorable outcome. Their collaboration has been instrumental in protecting the interests of Sri Lankan exporters and the numerous livelihoods that depend on the export sector.

The United States stands as the largest export market for Sri Lanka, and this decision positions Sri Lanka on equal terms with several major competitors, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Cambodia. Ensuring tariff equality is vital within the fiercely competitive global market, where purchasing decisions are often influenced by minor cost variations.

A tariff difference as small as 2.5 percentage points can significantly affect Sri Lanka’s export competitiveness, particularly in industries like apparel, where profit margins are tight and international buyers meticulously evaluate landed costs from various sourcing countries. Therefore, this recent decision offers essential stability and aids Sri Lankan exporters in maintaining their competitive stance in the U.S. market.

While EASL welcomes this encouraging development, it emphasizes the importance of leveraging this situation to enhance the long-term trading relationship between Sri Lanka and the United States. The evolving landscape of international trade policies can introduce unpredictability for exporters, highlighting the need for Sri Lanka to actively seek a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement with the U.S. This effort could lead to improved certainty, better market access, and stronger economic collaboration, benefiting both nations.

EASL is dedicated to collaborating closely with the Sri Lankan Government, U.S. authorities, industry stakeholders, and relevant organizations to boost Sri Lanka’s export competitiveness, broaden market opportunities, and establish a stable trading environment for exporters in Sri Lanka.

As the representative organization of Sri Lanka’s export community, EASL will persist in advocating for policies that reinforce the export sector and contribute to sustainable economic development through enhanced international trade.
