On February 6, 2026, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) held a significant meeting with Mr. Hung Chiu Wah Derek, Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka to Hong Kong, during his visit to the country. The meeting was led by the Chairman and CEO of the EDB and included the participation of Directors, underscoring the strategic importance of Hong Kong as a key export destination and gateway to East Asian and global markets.

The discussions focused on expanding trade collaboration, enhancing buyer-seller connections, and leveraging Hong Kong’s status as a global trading, logistics, and re-export hub. Mr. Hung highlighted the strong recognition of Ceylon Tea in Hong Kong and encouraged increased value addition, branding, and promotional activities to boost its presence in premium and niche markets.

A major highlight of the meeting was the promotion of Sri Lanka Expo 2026, the country’s flagship international trade exhibition, scheduled from June 18 to 21, 2026, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo. Mr. Hung was invited to support the organization of a buyer delegation from Hong Kong, which is expected to create tangible business opportunities for Sri Lankan exporters.

The meeting concluded on a positive and forward-looking note, reaffirming the EDB’s commitment to trade diplomacy, private-sector engagement, and strengthening commercial ties between Sri Lanka and Hong Kong.
