The Sri Lanka Export Development Board’s (EDB) National Packaging Centre (NPC) recently organized an informative workshop on EU Food Labeling Legislation at the Export Development Board premises.

More than 110 exporters and potential exporters attended the event, gaining valuable insights into the European Union market requirements. Participants learned about the background and application of EU food labeling laws, the mandatory components of EU food labeling, and how to implement current EU food labeling legislation in their businesses to produce compliant labels.

Ms. Nishani Maduwanthi, a Food Safety Management System Trainer and Lead Auditor at SGS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., led the workshop. She covered critical compliance areas such as EU food labeling legislation and its applications, mandatory labeling information (including product descriptions, ingredient listing, allergen labeling, nutrition information, and quantity marking), energy calculation, and nutrition and health claims (EU permitted nutrition and health claims). Additionally, she provided practical guidance on energy and reference intake (% RI) calculation for a portion/100g of a food product.

The National Packaging Centre, along with the Packaging Design Display Unit established in 2023, serves as Sri Lanka’s national focal point for packaging promotion and development. Its mission focuses on empowering exporters by providing knowledge, resources, and support to elevate packaging standards nationwide.

Through the National Packaging Centre, the EDB remains dedicated to empowering Sri Lankan exporters by promoting innovative and sustainable packaging practices. These efforts aim to add value to export products and enhance export readiness for international markets.
