Recently, EDB representatives conducted a site visit to Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC, a prominent global provider of high-quality natural vein graphite, to observe the entire process of graphite mining and processing.
This field visit offered valuable insights into the complete graphite supply chain, encompassing underground mining, ore extraction, processing, grading, purification, and preparation for export. The findings will aid the EDB in crafting strategies aimed at boosting Sri Lanka’s mineral export capabilities and establishing the nation as a leading supplier of premium graphite products on the global stage.
This effort aligns with the National Export Development Plan (NEDP), which has identified minerals and mineral-based products as key export sectors for Sri Lanka. The NEDP recognizes the potential of the country’s unique mineral resources, particularly its highly regarded vein graphite, to diversify exports, attract investments, and enhance foreign exchange earnings through value-added processes.
Notably, Sri Lanka stands out as the only country globally that commercially produces natural crystalline vein graphite, known for its extraordinary carbon purity and superior crystalline structure. These distinctive attributes render Sri Lankan graphite highly desirable for various advanced industrial applications, including lubricants, carbon brushes, brake pads, refractories, and innovative graphene technologies.
