Elon Musk Achieves Trillionaire Status with SpaceX Initial Public Offering

Elon Musk, a prominent entrepreneur, has become a key figure in popular culture, known for his ambitious ventures and significant wealth, which has positioned him as the world’s first trillionaire. His deep involvement in internet culture has made him a recognizable name, especially during a period when public sentiment towards the wealthy is increasingly critical, particularly regarding issues of inequality.

Despite the growing discontent with the ultra-wealthy, Musk has managed to cultivate a dedicated following. Unlike other billionaires such as Warren Buffett, who have charmed the public with their approachable personas, Musk’s straightforward and often unfiltered communication style resonates with many of his supporters. However, this same approach has drawn criticism, with detractors alleging that he exerts a level of influence reminiscent of oligarchs, raising questions about corporate governance at his companies and his increasingly political involvement.

On Thursday, SpaceX, the comprehensive aerospace and technology firm that, along with electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, constitutes the core of Musk’s business empire, achieved a remarkable milestone by securing $75 billion in its initial public offering. This event underscores the high level of investor enthusiasm surrounding Musk’s business endeavors. Forbes previously estimated Musk’s net worth at around $780 billion, significantly surpassing that of the next richest individual, Larry Page, co-founder of Alphabet.

According to Matt Durot, deputy editor at Forbes Wealth, “The second richest person’s wealth has been fluctuating around $300 billion, which is less than one-third of Musk’s potential worth moving forward.” He noted that only one other individual, Oracle founder Larry Ellison, has ever reached a net worth of $400 billion.

A substantial portion of Musk’s wealth is tied to SpaceX, where his stake is valued at approximately $866 billion. Alongside Tesla and his other assets, analysts predict that his net worth will exceed $1.1 trillion once shares begin trading on Friday, factoring in stock options that will vest over time.

Musk gained widespread recognition through his leadership of Tesla and SpaceX before further extending his influence with the $44 billion purchase of Twitter in 2022. This acquisition provided him a platform to engage directly with millions of users on various topics, including politics, immigration, government expenditure, and free speech.

His involvement in political matters, particularly his role in the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency under President Donald Trump, has sparked considerable controversy. This political engagement has coincided with a decline in Tesla’s sales across several international markets in 2025, as protests and consumer boycotts have emerged against the electric vehicle manufacturer.

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971, Musk is the son of a Canadian mother and a South African father. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. Musk took the helm as CEO of Tesla in 2008, driven by the belief that electric vehicles could deliver exceptional performance while integrating advanced software features, thereby transforming the global automotive landscape. Observers of the auto industry contend that Tesla’s achievements and its market capitalization exceeding one trillion dollars have prompted traditional car manufacturers to shift focus toward electric vehicles.
