FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – Sri Lanka has entered into partnerships with Canal France International (CFI), a French agency focused on media development, under the auspices of the European Union’s Green Recovery Facility program. This collaboration aims to enhance the reporting of environmental, climate, and economic issues throughout the nation.
The EU Delegation to Sri Lanka noted, “This initiative offers journalists the chance to expand their coverage by delving into a diverse array of environmental topics, such as climate finance, green investments, sustainable development, biodiversity, and the economic and policy aspects of the green transition.”
The initiative is designed to aid journalists in improving their technical and investigative capabilities, allowing them to delve deeper into these subjects and produce comprehensive, evidence-based articles. Participants will gain tools to analyze intricate climate finance matters, scrutinize public policies, and assess the effects of green investments.
“By equipping journalists to convert complex financial and governance concepts into relatable narratives for the public, this project ensures that citizens comprehend how green policies influence their daily lives, energy costs, and communities,” the statement added. “It seeks to incorporate the principles of ‘just transition’ and gender equity by amplifying the voices of women and marginalized groups in national environmental discussions.”
Implemented by Expertise France (EF) in collaboration with CFI, the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI), and the Ministry of Mass Media, this program transcends conventional classroom education.
Key components of the initiative include:
- Trilingual Foundation Training: An intensive capacity-building program for 60 journalists across Sinhala, Tamil, and English media, aimed at ensuring inclusive and nationwide reach.
- Mentored “Story Labs”: The establishment of six intensive Story Labs where journalists will receive direct editorial guidance to investigate, create, and publish high-quality, data-driven narratives on green transition topics.
- Youth Outreach: Engaging university students and emerging media professionals through campus and youth initiatives to create stories focused on green transitions and public policy matters.
- Learning and Sharing Networking Event: A platform for journalists, experts, policymakers, and key stakeholders to share insights, showcase stories generated through the program, and brainstorm future story ideas related to green transition themes.
This initiative aims to bolster the role of Sri Lankan media as a crucial driver of informed public discourse, enabling journalists to effectively engage with the community as the nation pursues sustainable economic recovery. Historically, environmental journalism in Sri Lanka has primarily focused on natural disasters and their ramifications. (Colombo/Sep7/2026)
