FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The European Union (EU) has announced a €2.6 million initiative aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and civic engagement in Sri Lanka.
The project, titled “Together We Rise,” is being carried out by World Vision and the SAFE Foundation. Its primary goal is to bolster civil society while advocating for human rights, inclusivity, and responsible governance.
Over a three-year period, the initiative will assist 50 civil society organizations by offering training, resources, and opportunities for collaboration with government bodies, policymakers, and 250 social activists.
Johann Hesse, the Head of Cooperation at the European Union in Sri Lanka, stated, “With this €2.6 million program, the EU is committing to a stronger alliance with civil society to promote inclusive and sustainable development.” He emphasized the role of civil society organizations in partnering with public institutions to connect with communities, engage citizens, and facilitate activities that align with both national and EU objectives.
The project aims to impact approximately 701,100 individuals across nine districts, focusing particularly on marginalized and conflict-affected regions, as well as organizations led by women, youth, and those representing persons with disabilities.
To assess the strengths and weaknesses of selected civil society organizations, a Capacity Development Needs Assessment (CDNA) will be conducted. The findings will inform customized capacity development plans.
The selected organizations will receive support in crucial areas such as governance and leadership, financial management and compliance, inclusion, safeguarding, gender equity, civic engagement and advocacy, digital innovation, and long-term sustainability.
Additionally, these organizations will be eligible for small grants to help implement their development initiatives. (Colombo/Apr30/2026)
