Exterminators PLC Urges Immediate Transition to Eco-Friendly Mosquito Management Amid Increasing Dengue Threat

As the season for mosquitoes draws near, Marlon Ferreira, the Founder and Managing Director of Exterminators PLC and Sentario UK Limited, is advocating for a significant reevaluation of Sri Lanka’s strategies in combating mosquito-borne illnesses, particularly dengue. He asserts that while thermal fogging has been a longstanding method for mosquito control, it is largely ineffective and may even pose dangers to public health and the environment. For many years, the sight of dense white fog enveloping neighborhoods has instilled a sense of action and reassurance among residents. However, Ferreira contends that this approach yields only fleeting and superficial benefits. “Thermal fogging is more about creating an illusion of mosquito management than ensuring genuine public health,” he remarks. “Its efficacy relies on the chemical directly contacting a mosquito in flight. Once the fog dissipates, mosquitoes that were sheltered quickly reemerge.”

Ferreira points out several critical issues stemming from the persistent use of fogging. A primary concern is the rise of insecticide-resistant “super mosquitoes,” as repeated treatments eliminate weaker insects while allowing the hardier ones to thrive and reproduce. Furthermore, many chemicals used in fogging are neurotoxic, posing risks to humans, pets, birds, and beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies. The indiscriminate nature of this method can also disrupt ecological harmony by eradicating natural mosquito predators like dragonflies, which can ultimately lead to an increase in mosquito populations. Ferreira recommends shifting towards Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM), which prioritizes source reduction and ecological restoration. “The best defense begins at home. Removing stagnant water is much more effective than relying solely on fogging operations,” he advises. He suggests several practical actions, including maintaining proper drainage in waste containers, uncovering hidden breeding locations like gutters and septic tanks, and fostering ecosystems that support natural predators such as fish, frogs, bats, and dragonflies. These strategies offer ongoing, chemical-free mosquito control.

Through Exterminators PLC and Sentario UK Limited, Ferreira is also spearheading a digital evolution in pest management, incorporating AI-powered monitoring systems and sustainable preventative measures. He underscores the necessity of aligning economic development with environmental stewardship. “With over thirty years in the global pest management sector, we need to rethink our strategies. Restoring ecosystems is not merely an environmental concern; it is vital for long-term public health,” Ferreira stated. He is a seasoned entrepreneur and circular economist with more than 33 years of experience, leading Exterminators PLC, Asia’s first publicly listed and carbon-neutral pest management company, as well as Sentario UK Limited, a UK-based pest technology firm focused on innovative and environmentally friendly solutions.
