Fitch Upgrades and Subsequently Withdraws Sri Lanka Lion Brewery’s Credit Rating

Fitch Ratings has confirmed the National Long-Term Rating of ‘AAA (lka)’ for Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC, based in Sri Lanka, while also announcing the withdrawal of this rating. The decision to withdraw the rating was made for commercial reasons, leading Fitch to cease its analytical coverage and rating services for the company.

Key Factors Influencing the Rating

Strong Market Position: Lion Brewery holds a dominant position in Sri Lanka’s beer market, with domestic sales accounting for over 90% of its gross revenue for the financial year ending in March 2026 (FY26). The company also exports its products to regions including Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, which are experiencing population growth and increasing income levels, alongside a significant Sri Lankan expatriate community. Lion offers a diverse product range across various price segments, which helps ensure stable cash flow throughout economic cycles, and the company enjoys prominent shelf space in retail outlets.

It is anticipated that competition in the local beer market will increase in the medium term, particularly with the entry of a major local spirits producer into the beer sector. This new competition is expected to leverage established retail channels and distribution networks; however, the impact on Lion’s revenues is projected to be gradual, primarily due to the time required for scaling up production capacity. Furthermore, potential new entrants encounter significant challenges due to the comprehensive ban on alcohol advertising in Sri Lanka.

Stable Financial Profile: Lion Brewery has consistently raised its prices to accommodate increases in excise taxes and rising operational costs, a strategy bolstered by its strong brand reputation. The company’s cost-optimization initiatives, including supplier diversification and enhanced working capital management, are expected to support its profit margins. Lion has maintained a net cash position for several years, attributed to robust operating cash flow and a cautious approach to capital expenditures. Over the medium term, the company is projected to uphold a strong interest coverage ratio, even in light of elevated commercial lending rates.

Weak Connections with Parent Company: Before the rating withdrawal, Lion’s rating was positioned higher than that of its parent company, Carson Cumberbatch PLC, based on Lion’s Standalone Credit Profile. This rating was underpinned by the evaluation of ‘Insulated’ access and control, as well as ‘Open’ legal ring-fencing according to Fitch’s Parent and Subsidiary Linkage Rating Criteria. Lion’s stronger credit profile compared to Carson is supported by more resilient cash flow generation.

The ‘Insulated’ access and control is evidenced by Lion’s financial independence and the presence of a significant minority shareholder, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Berhad, which holds a 25% stake, despite Carson’s controlling interest. The ‘Open’ legal ring-fencing assessment is based on the absence of regulatory or self-imposed constraints on Lion’s cash flows, as there are no formal restrictions in place. Historically, cash outflows from Lion to Carson have been limited to dividend payments.
