Foreign Reserves Fall Below $7 Billion Mark Once More

As of April 2026, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has reported a decline in its official reserve assets, which have fallen below the USD 7 billion threshold once again.

The reserves, which were recorded at USD 7,026 million at the close of March 2026, dropped to USD 6,759 million by the end of April, representing a decrease of 3.8%. The primary element of these official reserves, foreign currency holdings, also saw a reduction, decreasing from USD 6,800 million to USD 6,505 million during the same month, marking a 4.3% reduction.

Additionally, the bank’s gold reserves experienced a slight decline, falling from USD 222 million to USD 219 million, which equates to a decrease of 1.2%. This information has been disclosed in the most recent data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

It is noteworthy that Sri Lanka’s official reserve assets had exceeded the $7 billion mark for the first time in five and a half years in February 2026, reaching USD 7,284 million at the end of that month. However, there was a 3.5% decline in March, bringing the total down to USD 7,026 million, and this downward trend continued into April.
