COLOMBO, SRI LANKA: The George Keyt Foundation, in collaboration with the British High Commission in Colombo, is set to host an exhibition titled “19th Century Views of Ceylon.” This notable showcase will feature a unique array of historical artworks created by esteemed British artists.
Scheduled to take place from July 30 to August 1, 2026, the event will unfold at Westminster House, the official residence of the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka. This exhibition marks a significant milestone as it will be the first public art event hosted at Westminster House.
Attendees will have the chance to explore an exclusive collection of significant works drawn from various private collections, many of which have never been publicly exhibited before. The thoughtfully assembled display will include landscapes, architectural scenes, and historical insights, all contributing to a vivid portrayal of 19th-century Ceylon.
Among the distinguished artists featured in the exhibition are:
- Edward Lear, a celebrated English painter, illustrator, and author.
- Andrew Nicholl, a well-known landscape artist recognized for his watercolor representations of the island.
- Constance Gordon Cummings, an acclaimed female writer and artist, whose book ‘Two Happy Years in Ceylon’ recounts her experiences on the island. She was associated with notable figures such as Marianne North and Isabella Bird.
Together, these artworks provide a rare glimpse into how British artists perceived and depicted the island during the 19th century.
British Airways will be the primary partner for this exhibition, coinciding with the airline’s plans to resume direct flights to Colombo in October 2026, thereby enhancing the travel link between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.
