FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Reserve Management Conference hosted by Sri Lanka’s central bank gathered a diverse group of central bankers, sovereign asset managers, policymakers, economists, and investment experts to discuss the dynamic global challenges and opportunities influencing reserve management practices.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) emphasized that the event served as a crucial platform for examining the evolving landscape of reserve management, highlighting the necessity for agility, foresight, and resilience in a world that is becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable.
Discussions at the conference focused on several key topics, including methods for enhancing foreign reserve buffers, the impact of geopolitical fragmentation on Asia and the global economy, the growing significance of digital and tokenized assets within official reserves, the dominance of the US dollar in international reserve holdings, and the value of gold along with other alternative assets.
Among the notable attendees were representatives from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Asian Development Bank, Banque de France, Bank for International Settlements, Bank Indonesia, Bank Negara Malaysia, Bank of Korea, Bank of Thailand, Inter-American Development Bank, Reserve Bank of India, Swiss National Bank, World Bank, and World Gold Council.
CBSL Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe addressed the gathering, underscoring that a sustainable approach to accumulating reserves must be grounded in robust external sector fundamentals and an economy capable of generating and retaining foreign currency.
He noted that geopolitical factors have become increasingly significant for reserve managers, with issues such as fragmentation, sanctions, trade conflicts, and disturbances in global financial markets affecting investment strategies, liquidity, and portfolio management approaches.
Domenico Nardelli, Treasurer of the AIIB, provided insights into the changing international financial environment and its effects on reserve and asset management practices.
The conference also served as a valuable opportunity for participants to leverage diverse international experiences, exchange lessons and innovative strategies, and strengthen professional connections among central banks, international financial institutions, and market participants.
