GS1 Lanka Pioneers the Transition to 2D Barcodes in Sri Lanka

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – As companies gear up for the increased use of 2D barcodes and the rising demand for detailed product information, GS1 Lanka is concentrating on advancing product identification in Sri Lanka.

The transition from conventional barcodes to 2D barcodes represents a significant milestone, especially as consumers become more interested in reliable information regarding a product’s origin, ingredients, authenticity, and usage, stated Revan Fernando, President of GS1 Lanka, during the organization’s 10th annual general meeting.

GS1 Sunrise 2027 is a worldwide industry effort aimed at upgrading retail checkout systems to accommodate 2D barcodes, including QR codes and Data Matrix codes, alongside traditional 1D UPC codes by the end of 2027.

Through its Sunrise 2027 initiative, GS1 Lanka is collaborating with the retail and healthcare sectors to facilitate the transition to 2D barcodes. Unlike standard barcodes utilized at checkout, GS1 QR codes enable consumers to access a broader spectrum of product information and enhance traceability and verification in accordance with GS1 standards.

Fernando encouraged brands to participate in this transition, highlighting that businesses will need to reconsider how they utilize the limited space available on product packaging and how they engage with consumers.

GS1 Lanka also plans to launch a new retail information platform designed to assist member brands in delivering more comprehensive product information and improving how their products are presented to consumers.

Alikie Perera, CEO of GS1 Lanka, emphasized that the organization is dedicated to aiding Sri Lankan businesses in adapting to shifts in global supply chains and consumer expectations. “The upcoming phase will focus more on 2D barcodes, GS1 Digital Link, traceability, and digital product information, as businesses prepare for a more interconnected and informative marketplace,” she stated.

GS1 Lanka continues to run awareness programs for entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), manufacturers, and exporters, addressing topics such as product identification, barcode standards, traceability, supply chain efficiency, and market access.

The organization has also witnessed a notable increase in the adoption of GS1 Activate and Verified by GS1, with over 5,500 member companies registered on these platforms and more than 20,000 product records uploaded.
