Hambantota International Port (HIP) welcomed the cruise liner Mein Schiff 6 on its maiden call on December 3rd, underscoring the port’s growing reputation as a prominent cruise destination in South Asia.

The Malta-flagged Mein Schiff 6, built in 2017 and measuring 295.17 metres in length, arrived from Colombo carrying 2,289 passengers and 950 crew members. Following its visit to HIP, the vessel is scheduled to continue to Port Klang. The port call was facilitated by Hapag-Lloyd as the local agent, while Aitken Spence Travels organized shore excursions for the guests.

“We are delighted to welcome Mein Schiff 6 for the very first time,” said Tommy Yang, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG). “Each maiden call reinforces the confidence global cruise lines place in HIP’s growing capabilities, passenger services, and our commitment to delivering a seamless cruise experience.”

This visit further strengthens the relationship between TUI Cruises and HIP, following several successful calls by Mein Schiff 5 in recent cruise seasons. Mindaka Dassanayake, General Manager of Hapag-Lloyd Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., commented, “TUI Cruises has been an important partner in showcasing southern Sri Lanka to international travellers.”

Hambantota International Port is recognized for its cruise-ready infrastructure, offering deep-water berths and efficient maritime services that adhere to the highest international standards. It is the first port in Sri Lanka to obtain ISO certifications for quality management, environmental management, and health and safety, reflecting its strong operational discipline.

Additionally, HIP is acknowledged as one of the cleanest and most environmentally responsible ports in the region. “Sustainability is at the heart of our operations,” noted the COO of HIPG, highlighting initiatives such as the Green Port Policy, a large-scale Green Zone tree-planting program, and the pioneering Coral Reef Protection Project. Research has shown significant live coral coverage within the port’s breakwaters, supporting these environmental efforts. “Our environmental achievements are an integral part of what makes Hambantota an attractive and responsible call for cruise lines.”

The arrival of Mein Schiff 6 marks another milestone in Hambantota International Port’s emergence as a safe, clean, and future-ready gateway for cruise tourism in Sri Lanka’s deep south.
