Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harsha de Silva has called for recognition of the previous government’s economic achievements while commenting on Sri Lanka’s IMF programme.

His remarks come after IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, in a recent interview, commended the current Sri Lankan government for its commitment to maintaining macroeconomic stability and continuing reforms under the IMF-supported programme.

In a post on X, de Silva said that while he supports the IMF programme and appreciates the present government’s focus on stability, as well as Georgieva’s enthusiasm about the country’s prospects, key economic gains were made under the previous administration.

He highlighted that inflation had fallen from 70% to 2%, economic growth had rebounded from -7.3% to +5%, and the first-ever national governance diagnostic study had been requested and completed during the prior government.

De Silva stressed that these accomplishments should be acknowledged alongside the ongoing reforms under the present government.
