Hayleys Solar, the leading provider of renewable energy solutions in Sri Lanka, celebrated a significant achievement in its commitment to sustainable energy by inaugurating its 3MW Veyangoda Ground-Mounted Solar Project. The event was attended by Hon. Anura Karunathilake, the Minister of Energy.
This project represents the initial phase of Hayleys Solar’s ambitious goal to develop a total of 300MW of ground-mounted solar energy installations throughout Sri Lanka, reinforcing the company’s dedication to expanding large-scale renewable energy initiatives.
As a division of Hayleys Fentons Limited, which is part of the Hayleys Group—Sri Lanka’s most versatile blue-chip conglomerate with nearly 150 years of history across 17 industries—the Veyangoda project illustrates the Group’s ongoing investment in bolstering its renewable energy capabilities. This aligns with their enduring commitment to sustainable innovation and contributing to national development.
Situated next to the Aththanagalla Oya, the solar project has been engineered to endure challenging environmental conditions, including the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. By utilizing historical data from the Irrigation Department, Hayleys Solar designed an elevated solar mounting system with increased clearance and safety features, alongside elevated inverter supports and tailored cable routing systems to enhance durability.
During the inauguration, Minister Anura Karunathilake emphasized the critical role of private sector involvement in the energy transition of Sri Lanka, stating, “To build a secure and sustainable energy future for our country, we must tap into the potential of renewable energy and encourage more private sector engagement. Initiatives like this one illustrate how investment, innovation, and climate-resilient solutions can unite to support this national priority. We encourage further projects that can enhance our renewable energy infrastructure and promote a cleaner, more sustainable Sri Lanka.”
Hasith Prematillake, Managing Director of Hayleys Fentons Limited, remarked, “The Veyangoda project exemplifies our dedication to creating renewable energy solutions that are attuned to our environmental realities. By incorporating climate-resilient engineering with innovative land use, we have established a solar installation that not only endures tough site conditions but also maximizes the value derived from the land.”
The Veyangoda project has a total capacity of 4,143.36 kWp of DC power and 3MW of AC power, utilizing 640W bifacial solar panels. It is anticipated to produce around 6,351,770.88 kWh of clean electricity each year, which is sufficient to meet the annual energy demands of approximately 2,700 average households in Sri Lanka, while also preventing about 4,339.53 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
With an average height clearance of about 2.7 meters, the elevated structure allows for productive utilization of the land beneath the solar panels. As part of its agrivoltaic strategy, this area will facilitate the growth of vegetables like Scotch bonnet pepper and brinjal, thus promoting agricultural activities alongside renewable energy production.
Roshane Perera, Deputy Managing Director – Energy at Hayleys Fentons Limited, stated, “Our Veyangoda project highlights how innovative solar designs can yield multiple advantages from one location. The elevated setup not only improves flood resilience but also enhances airflow beneath the panels and increases the efficiency of bifacial technology through better light reflection. The planned agrivoltaic initiative further illustrates how renewable energy generation can effectively coexist with agricultural endeavors.”
This project underscores Hayleys Solar’s commitment to advancing resilient, sustainable, and innovative renewable energy solutions while aiding Sri Lanka’s transition to a cleaner energy landscape.
