Hambantota International Port (HIP) has successfully managed the container ship MSC Marie Leslie, achieving one of its highest container volumes recorded to date. This accomplishment further establishes the port as a rising center for containerized cargo in the area.
The MSC-operated vessel docked at HIP from April 11 to April 15, 2026, during which the port recorded an impressive 7,968 container movements, resulting in a total of 13,260 TEUs. This marks the highest single-vessel throughput ever achieved by HIP.
This recent achievement surpasses earlier records, including the handling of 12,957 TEUs on the MSC Ilenia and 11,369 TEUs on the MSC Ruby in March of this year, indicating a consistent improvement in the port’s container handling capabilities.
Officials from the port highlighted that this operation showcases HIP’s increasing operational capacity and its efficiency in managing high-volume vessel operations. “This achievement reflects the coordination, discipline, and capability of our teams across all functions,” stated Tommy Yang, Chief Operating Officer of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG). “As we see a rise in volumes, we remain committed to providing safe, efficient, and reliable services to our clients.”
The successful operation involved various departments, including operations, engineering, safety, and navigation, as well as external partners who played a vital role in maintaining high productivity levels under challenging conditions.
Situated just 10 nautical miles from the primary East-West shipping lane, Hambantota International Port has been progressively enhancing its container handling capabilities in response to changing global trade dynamics and the growing need for alternative transshipment centers.
The successful management of the MSC Marie Leslie further underscores HIP’s preparedness to handle larger volumes and its expanding significance in the regional maritime and logistics sector.
