HMD (Human Mobile Devices), a prominent mobile phone manufacturer in Europe known for its Nokia brand, has teamed up with Dialog Axiata PLC, the top connectivity provider in Sri Lanka, to launch a new line of budget-friendly 4G feature phones in the country. The new models, HMD 101 4G and HMD 102 4G, are designed to enhance communication while providing modern technological features.
This collaboration merges Nokia’s renowned durability and reliability with Dialog’s expansive coverage, facilitating Sri Lanka’s shift from outdated 2G networks to contemporary 4G LTE. The initiative aims to deliver a superior connectivity experience to local users.
Feature phones continue to play a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s mobile ecosystem, acting as essential communication tools for many households and serving as reliable backup devices for professionals and travelers looking to disconnect from smartphones.
While transitioning users from 2G to 4G is a primary goal, the focus of this partnership is to enhance the aspects that matter most to consumers: high-definition VoLTE call quality, improved reception, convenient USB Type-C charging, robust IP52 splash resistance, and extended battery life without the need for costly smartphones.
The HMD 101 4G stands out as the flagship device of this 4G line, designed for everyday dependability and communication efficiency. It features a 2.0-inch display, dual SIM 4G VoLTE support, a USB Type-C charging port, an MP3 player, wireless FM radio, and a powerful dual LED flashlight. The HMD 102 4G complements this with a modern aesthetic, incorporating all essential 4G features along with a stylish rounded design, a smartphone-like camera with an LED flash, auto call recording, and various practical utilities, making high-quality 4G technology accessible to all budget levels. Both models are equipped with a removable 1,000 mAh battery, providing up to 8 hours of talk time and 625 hours of standby time.
Vivek Khandelwal, General Manager for Emerging Asia at HMD, expressed the company’s long-term commitment to the Sri Lankan market, stating, “We aim to compete across all price points, not just those that attract headlines. The 101 4G and 102 4G signify the entry-level options in our 4G feature phone range and meet the same quality standards as our higher-end devices. Dialog Axiata ensures these phones are accessible to customers nationwide.”
Gayan Wijethilaka, Country Head for Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Singapore at HMD, noted that customers are drawn to these phones for their simplicity, durability, and longevity. “With the introduction of 4G, call clarity is enhanced, guaranteeing reliability for years,” he said.
Lim Li San, Group Chief Operating Officer of Dialog Axiata PLC, highlighted the importance of making better connectivity accessible to all Sri Lankans. “As the country adopts newer network technologies, our collaboration with HMD aims to make 4G more affordable and reachable through smart device options, aligning with our goal of improving call quality and reliable connectivity for everyone,” he commented.
These devices are designed for everyday use and come with a one-year replacement warranty for added peace of mind. Both the HMD 101 4G and HMD 102 4G are priced at LKR 8,900 each, available nationwide through Dialog Customer Care Centers. HMD and Nokia products are distributed in Sri Lanka by Softlogic Communications.
