Dr. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), visited the Central Bank of Sri Lanka on February 17, 2026, during her trip to the country. This visit marked the 75th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s membership in the IMF and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s 75th anniversary. During her visit, Dr. Georgieva met with Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and other senior officials of the Central Bank at its premises.
In the meeting, the Governor expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Georgieva and her team for their unwavering support through the current Extended Fund Facility (EFF). He highlighted their crucial role in facilitating the debt restructuring process, which has been instrumental in helping Sri Lanka recover from severe economic challenges. Dr. Weerasinghe also thanked the IMF for its extensive technical assistance in various areas, such as monetary policy and modeling, macroprudential analysis, and financial sector policies.
Dr. Georgieva acknowledged Sri Lanka’s performance under the current IMF program as a success story. She praised the Central Bank’s efforts in restoring macroeconomic stability following the economic crisis. While noting the repeated setbacks the country has endured in recent years, she expressed confidence that Sri Lanka is well-positioned to achieve higher growth, provided necessary structural reforms are implemented and maintained.
