Washington, D.C.: Mr. Evan Papageorgiou, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission Chief for Sri Lanka, announced that an IMF staff team is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from January 22 to January 28, 2026. The purpose of this visit is to discuss with local authorities the extent and implications of the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The findings from this mission will be integral to subsequent discussions regarding the IMF-supported program.

This mission demonstrates the IMF’s ongoing commitment to assisting Sri Lanka as it navigates the economic and humanitarian challenges following the recent cyclone. During their stay, the IMF team will engage with government officials and various stakeholders to gain a comprehensive understanding of the cyclone’s impact on infrastructure, livelihoods, and the country’s economic stability.

The IMF team will evaluate how best to support Sri Lanka in its recovery efforts. This includes the possibility of resuming the Extended Fund Facility-supported program and providing policy advice and technical assistance aimed at fostering resilience and sustainable growth. Further updates will be communicated at the conclusion of the mission.
