IMF Executive Board to Review Sri Lanka’s USD 200 Million Emergency Financing Request on December 19

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board is scheduled to review Sri Lanka’s request for emergency financial assistance of SDR 150.5 million (approximately USD 200 million) under the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI) on December 19, 2025, according to the IMF Executive Board calendar.

This request comes in the wake of the widespread destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which severely affected several regions of Sri Lanka and prompted authorities to seek urgent support from the IMF.

Earlier this month, IMF Mission Chief for Sri Lanka, Evan Papageorgiou, confirmed that Sri Lankan authorities had formally requested assistance equivalent to around 26 percent of the country’s IMF quota. He noted that the request remains subject to approval by the Executive Board.

In a statement issued on December 5, the IMF extended its deepest sympathies to those in Sri Lanka impacted by the cyclone and reaffirmed its ongoing engagement with the authorities throughout the recovery period.

The IMF emphasized its continued commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s recovery, rebuilding efforts, and resilience enhancement as the country takes urgent measures to address the economic and social impacts of the natural disaster.

If approved, the Rapid Financing Instrument would provide Sri Lanka with swift access to emergency funds to help address immediate balance-of-payments needs resulting from the cyclone-related shock.
