On Friday, India and Sri Lanka held discussions in New Delhi to evaluate their collaborative efforts in the energy sector. The Indian delegation was headed by Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, while the Sri Lankan side was represented by Anura Karunathilake, Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation, and Energy.
The ministers assessed the status of key projects, including the proposed High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnection between India and Sri Lanka, as well as the Sampur Solar Power Project.
In addition, they explored avenues for enhancing collaboration in cross-border electricity trading, renewable energy, transmission infrastructure, and skill development, aiming to boost energy security and facilitate a shift toward cleaner energy solutions in the region.
The Indian delegation shared insights on the development of transmission systems through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) framework, which operates under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Both nations reviewed the advancements made under current bilateral frameworks and reaffirmed their resolve to fortify cooperation in the energy sector, focusing on sustainable development and regional energy stability.
Minister Manohar Lal emphasized India’s dedication to the enduring energy partnership with Sri Lanka, while Anura Karunathilake expressed gratitude for India’s ongoing support and highlighted Sri Lanka’s intention to further enhance bilateral energy collaboration.
The meeting was attended by Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, along with senior officials from the Indian government. The Sri Lankan delegation included Mahishini Colonne, the High Commissioner to India, and other high-ranking officials.
This high-level meeting followed a visit by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Colombo, where he reiterated India’s commitment to Sri Lanka as part of its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.
The official visit underscored New Delhi’s ongoing commitment to realizing the vision set forth during President Dissanayaka’s visit in December 2024 and the bilateral agreements established during Prime Minister Modi’s visit in April 2025.
