India has pledged 30 million US dollars to reconstruct damaged bridges in Sri Lanka, with the inauguration of the first two bridges scheduled for next week, according to Indian High Commissioner in Colombo, Santosh Jha.

“Over the coming week, we are looking at inaugurating two bridges constructed under this package,” High Commissioner Jha informed reporters in Colombo. “We will also commence the restoration work on the Northern railway line. The bridge construction is supported by grants of nearly 30 million dollars.”

India has announced a comprehensive aid package of 450 million dollars, which includes 100 million dollars in grants. “Our focus on expeditious implementation is a manifestation of the people-centric nature of the India-Sri Lanka partnership,” Jha added.

Beyond the 450 million dollar package, India extended its support with rescue services during Cyclone Ditwah and provided quick relief in its aftermath. To ensure the roads were swiftly made motorable, India airlifted 228 tonnes of Bailey Bridge parts.

The Indian Army Engineering Corps successfully assembled a Bailey Bridge in Kilinochchi, located in the North. Additionally, two other bridges near Kandy are approaching completion, according to High Commissioner Jha.
