The artistic works of Nihal Sangabo Dias uniquely explore the relationship between place and memory, particularly in the context of Sri Lanka. His paintings reflect a dynamic portrayal of the island, showcasing its landscapes, communities, and vibrant colors, all viewed through the lens of an artist who has dedicated years to observing his homeland. This perspective is the essence of the exhibition titled ‘Around the Island,’ which is being presented by ITC Ratnadipa in honor of World Tourism Day. The exhibition will be held at the WelcomGallery of ITC Ratnadipa from September 25 to October 11, 2026, and aims to highlight Sri Lanka as envisioned by a local artist—an ever-evolving composition rather than a static representation.
Rather than merely illustrating the island’s scenery, Dias encourages his audience to engage with Sri Lanka through his distinctive artistic voice. His work transcends typical tourist views, shaped by his experiences and memories, which he skillfully conveys on canvas. While tourism is often linked to arriving at a destination, a true sense of place is also crafted through the narratives and perspectives that define a country’s representation. In Dias’ art, Sri Lanka emerges as a personal encounter, allowing common landscapes and daily life to be reimagined and appreciated from a new angle.
Dilshi Fernando, the Head of PR & Marketing at ITC Ratnadipa, commented on the exhibition, stating, “Since the inception of WelcomGallery in April, we have aimed to provide a platform for Sri Lankan artists to present their work to a broader audience, including international visitors to ITC Ratnadipa. This exhibition holds special significance as it aligns with World Tourism Day. Through ‘Around the Island,’ we honor the artistry of Nihal Sangabo Dias, who beautifully encapsulates the essence of Sri Lanka in its most genuine form, from depictions of fishermen and village life to the scenic beauty of Galle and Kandy. His art serves as a reminder that the heart of Sri Lanka resides in these everyday experiences and locations. We invite everyone to come and witness the exhibition, seeing our island through his artistic lens.”
Reflecting on his exhibition, Sangabo Dias expressed, “I aspire for these paintings to provide insight into Sri Lanka as I perceive its beauty, character, colors, and the moments that have resonated with me. Through my art, I hope to encourage viewers to take a moment to see the island from a different perspective, discovering their own connections with the places, people, and stories that make Sri Lanka unique.”
With ‘Around the Island,’ ITC Ratnadipa intertwines art, location, and viewpoint in celebration of World Tourism Day, offering both local residents and international visitors a chance to experience Sri Lanka through the eyes of a native artist. The exhibition will be available for free viewing at the WelcomGallery of ITC Ratnadipa from September 25 to October 11, 2026.
