Jazz, a prominent connectivity provider in Pakistan, has successfully installed solar energy systems at 1,000 telecom sites nationwide in partnership with Huawei. This initiative, boasting a total capacity of 13 MW, stands out as one of the largest implementations of renewable energy within the telecommunications industry.
The primary aim of this project is to shift the telecom infrastructure from reliance on fossil fuels to solar energy, thereby fostering more stable operations in areas where energy supply can be inconsistent.
These solar-powered locations are anticipated to produce around 11 GWh of clean energy each year, which will contribute to a reduction of roughly 15,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Beyond the environmental benefits, this initiative enhances network reliability, especially in underserved regions with limited energy access, providing consistent connectivity to millions of users.
The project incorporates comprehensive green site solutions that integrate solar generation, battery storage, and advanced energy management systems. These technologies are aimed at optimizing energy consumption, ensuring operational stability, and improving efficiency across various conditions. The partnership with Huawei facilitates the large-scale implementation of these innovative solutions throughout the network.
Aamir Ibrahim, CEO of JazzWorld, expressed, “To build a digital future for Pakistan, we need infrastructure that is both durable and sustainable. Expanding our solar capabilities across the network not only minimizes our environmental impact but also enhances service reliability for our customers. Our collaboration with Huawei has allowed us to implement this transition effectively, aligning with our sustainability objectives and contributing to Pakistan’s clean energy goals.”
Steven Yi, Senior Vice President of Huawei, remarked, “This initiative represents a significant step in Huawei’s partnership with Jazz in promoting green communication solutions. By utilizing innovative energy technologies, we are assisting operators in cutting down carbon emissions while improving network efficiency. We are dedicated to supporting Pakistan’s telecommunications sector as it progresses towards a more sustainable and intelligent future.”
The solar deployment is set to grow as part of a comprehensive long-term sustainability strategy, with an ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
