Joseph Fraser Ninewells Launches Sri Lanka’s Premier Retreat for Postpartum Care at ParentX

ParentX, a new initiative from Joseph Fraser Ninewells Hospital, has launched Sri Lanka’s first specialized postpartum retreat, introducing a globally recognized recovery model for mothers after giving birth. This facility is designed to aid mothers during the crucial weeks following childbirth, placing equal importance on maternal recovery as it does on the birth experience.

The period after childbirth, often termed the fourth trimester, is frequently one of the least supported phases of motherhood, despite its growing acknowledgment worldwide. Postpartum recovery centers have become an integral part of maternal healthcare in various countries, assisting mothers in their physical, emotional, and mental recovery while fostering confidence in caring for their infants. ParentX aims to bring this supportive model to Sri Lanka, offering a program that is carefully customized to align with the needs, traditions, and lifestyles of local families.

In remarks about the launch, Yoosuf Sabir, Deputy General Manager at Joseph Fraser, stated, “The care for a mother should not conclude with the birth of her child. The recovery phase post-childbirth is vital and warrants the same level of focus as the pregnancy period. ParentX was developed to provide mothers with the time, expert guidance, and compassionate care necessary for recovery, helping them regain confidence and embark on parenthood with a solid foundation. While inspired by internationally recognized postpartum recovery models, every feature of ParentX has been meticulously tailored for Sri Lankan families.”

Designed by a multidisciplinary clinical team at Joseph Fraser, ParentX merges evidence-based postpartum support with culturally resonant practices, offering a comprehensive recovery experience. The program encompasses individualized breastfeeding assistance, education on newborn care, physiotherapy, nutritional planning, emotional wellness counseling, mindfulness activities, Ayurveda-inspired therapies, and guidance for partners and family members to actively support the mother’s recovery journey.

The launch of ParentX coincides with a growing global focus on postpartum wellbeing, with increasing evidence suggesting that structured support during the fourth trimester enhances maternal recovery, strengthens the bond between parent and child, supports mental health, and leads to better outcomes for both mothers and their babies.

In the context of Sri Lanka, where birth rates are on the decline, ParentX serves as a timely enhancement to maternal healthcare, empowering mothers to navigate the fourth trimester with assurance and emphasizing postpartum recovery as an integral part of the motherhood experience rather than a supplementary option.

ParentX embodies Joseph Fraser’s dedication to improving women’s health by extending care beyond childbirth and addressing a significant gap in Sri Lanka’s maternal care framework.
