LPL 2026 Gets Under Way: Champions Jaffna Clash With Runners-Up Galle in Season Opener

Colombo – The sixth edition of the Lanka Premier League got under way yesterday (17), with the tournament’s Twenty20 double round-robin format kicking off at the SSC Grounds in Colombo.

The 2026 Lanka Premier League, organised by Sri Lanka Cricket, runs from July 17 to August 8 and features five franchise teams competing across 24 matches before the playoffs decide this year’s champions.

Fittingly, the tournament opener brought together the two best-performing sides from the previous edition: Jaffna, the 2024 champions, took on Galle, last season’s runnersup, in a repeat of sorts at the top of the table. The match got under way at 7.30 p.m. following an opening ceremony at the venue.

With five teams battling through a double round-robin schedule over three weeks, this year’s LPL promises a tightly-fought group stage before the top sides advance to the playoffs in early August.
