Market Declines in Friday Trading, Driven by Banking Sector Activity

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – On Friday morning, the Colombo Stock Exchange in Sri Lanka experienced a decline, as indicated by CSE data. The benchmark All Share Price Index (ASPI) decreased by 0.11 percent.

The ASPI fell by 23.09 points, settling at 21,424.48, while the more actively traded S&P SL20 index dropped by 0.02 percent, equivalent to a decline of 1.41 points, bringing it to 6,003.58.

Among the stocks that positively impacted the ASPI were Melstacorp, which rose by 0.82 percent to reach 183.75 rupees; Commercial Bank of Ceylon, increasing by 0.12 percent to 201.50 rupees; Colombo Dockyard, up by 0.41 percent to 121.75 rupees; and People’s Leasing & Finance, which saw a 1.49 percent rise to 20.40 rupees.

Conversely, the top decliners included Richard Pieris and Company, which fell by 0.65 percent to 30.50 rupees; Access Engineering, down 1.17 percent to 76.00 rupees; LOLC Holdings, which decreased by 0.92 percent to 485.00 rupees; and Dialog Axiata, declining by 0.23 percent to 44.30 rupees.

The total market turnover reached 159.5 million rupees, with the banking sector leading the way at 54.4 million rupees.

In a separate announcement, Commercial Bank of Ceylon reported that its Tier 2 debenture issue, compliant with Basel III standards, was oversubscribed. The bank received applications for over 200 million debentures valued at 20 billion rupees, significantly exceeding the initial offering of 10 billion rupees. This issue closed on July 16, 2026, and the bank is now awaiting confirmation from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) to officially recognize the raised funds as part of its Tier 2 capital.
