In a proactive response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, a unique coalition of young professionals has successfully assisted 64,800 survivors, addressing significant gaps left by conventional aid efforts.

SRI LANKA — In the latter part of 2025, Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka, resulting in severe flooding and landslides that caused the worst damage seen in the last twenty years. The disaster resulted in a confirmed death toll of 648 and left more than 2.3 million people in need of urgent assistance as transportation and power infrastructure crumbled nationwide. Amid the overwhelming destruction, an unconventional group of responders emerged, employing a strategic approach reminiscent of corporate environments.
Round Table Sri Lanka (RTSL), part of the global Round Table International network encompassing over 65 nations, is comprised of young leaders, executives, and professionals under 40 who prioritize service through a lens of professional excellence. When the cyclone struck, these members utilized their expertise in project management and supply chain logistics to tackle the crisis as it unfolded.
A Nationwide Humanitarian Crisis
The cyclone inflicted an immense economic and human cost, with direct damages estimated at $4.1 billion. More than 100,000 homes suffered damage, and 34,000 individuals found refuge in government shelters. RTSL shifted its focus toward the “blind spots” in rural areas such as Thambuththegama, Nochchiyagama, and the coastal regions of Kandakuliya, where infrastructure failures hindered traditional aid distribution.
Utilizing its global connections, the organization collaborated with P&G India and Round Table India to secure and distribute LKR 21 million worth of critical hygiene and sanitation supplies. This initiative involved the deployment of 18,000 standardized “Household Packs,” ensuring that even the most isolated families received essential sanitation items in a single delivery. To date, this effort has reached an estimated 64,800 individuals.
Operational Agility
The response from the fellowship was marked by remarkable agility. Members undertook 26-hour endurance missions in personal high-lift four-wheel drive vehicles to access survivors. In Gampaha, inflatable rescue boats were used to navigate floodwaters exceeding five feet. In the mountainous region of Kotmale, RTSL coordinated with the Sri Lanka Air Force to airlift 400 ration packs to communities completely isolated from essential services.
The initiative has made significant contributions to the social fabric of the island:
- Education: More than 3,500 children have been assisted in returning to school through the “Back-to-School” initiative.
- Healthcare: Following the destruction of the Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital, the fellowship donated 100 specialized mattresses to support critical care operations.
- Latest Actions: RTSL has recently set up dedicated care distribution hubs at Sandalankawa (Divisional Hospital ‘A’) and Akaragama (Divisional Hospital ‘C’) to specifically provide hygiene essentials and Pampers to mothers and infants through frontline medical personnel.

All strategic decisions and significant expenditures undergo a stringent internal audit process, requiring a mandatory approval from a 3-4 member Core Team before any aid is distributed. As the organization transitions into Phase 3 (Recovery), concentrating on the long-term rebuilding of rural schools, they continue to demonstrate that a nimble, elite network of professionals serves as the most effective link between disaster response and recovery.
